We are Evolutionary Aquatics

OUR STORY

Evolutionary Aquatics began as Mahogany Mermaids in 2014, a social swim group dedicated to addressing the lack of aquatic opportunities tailored specifically for mature Black women. Seeing a rapidly growing demand and the transformative power of community-driven swimming programs, we embarked on our journey toward formal coaching and instructor certification in 2018. Along the way, we naturally became mentors and role models for other emerging Black-centered swim clubs nationwide.

In 2020, fueled by community enthusiasm and a strategic partnership with Miller Swimming, we successfully secured an Adult Learn to Swim grant—generously matched beyond our expectations by the Charlotte, NC swim community. This remarkable achievement marked the official launch of our nonprofit organization: Evolutionary Aquatics.

Since our formal establishment in 2021, Evolutionary Aquatics has proudly cultivated a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive environment where fun meets empowerment. We firmly believe everyone—regardless of income, zip code, culture, or past experiences—should have equal opportunities to embrace aquatic activities. Through swimming, we joyfully reclaim our heritage, foster community, and actively dismantle historical inequities.

OUR VISION

We envision a world where Black communities move through water with power, pride, and freedom. At Evolutionary Aquatics, we are reclaiming a future where aquatic spaces celebrate equity, mastery, and the enduring legacy of Black swimmers and water stewards.

OUR MISSION

Evolutionary Aquatics exists to reclaim and celebrate Black aquatic heritage by dismantling historical barriers and providing culturally affirming swim programs. We empower Black adults to develop essential swim skills, build endurance, and thrive in aquatic spaces—restoring legacy, fostering community, and transforming narratives for future generations.
