Level 3: Stroke Development

A skill-building program that strengthens foundational abilities while introducing survival swimming concepts, stroke development, and basic water competency.

Stroke Development

Level 3 is designed for adults who have mastered foundational water skills and are ready for the next step in their swimming journey. Using the American Red Cross curriculum, this level builds on previously learned skills while introducing survival swimming concepts, stroke development, and proficiency in deeper water. Participants who successfully complete Level 3 achieve basic water competency in a pool environment.

American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Curriculum Objectives: 

  • Enter water by jumping from the side

  • Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions

  • Bobbing while moving toward safety

  • Rotary breathing

  • Survival float

  • Back float

  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back

  • Tread water

  • Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front

  • Front crawl and elementary backstroke
